There is no single best approach to treating chemical dependency.

Different methods need to be introduced based on clients’ motivation, strengths, and personal preferences. Clinical flexibility and careful attention to individual differences is necessary for effective treatment.

We find three elements critical to this process:

1. Clients and families need to understand the nature of addiction, and its biological, psychological, and social consequences.

2. Clients and families need adaptive coping and problem-solving abilities to maintain recovery and improve the quality of their lives.

3. Clients and families need effective interpersonal skills to develop supportive relationships and to meet emotional needs.
